The purpose of this standard is to define and publish standardized surrogate gasoline and diesel mixtures to be used in materials testing. This standard also encourages the use of standardized test fluids to allow for consistent results from material tests and more uniform properties of materials.
The formulations in this standard are intended to allow tests to be performed within a reasonable time as well as exaggerate the effects of typical severe fuel on materials.
For the purposes of this standard, the term fuel is used with fully blended hydrocarbons or hydrocarbon oxygenate mixtures for use in commercial automotive engines.
The term FLUID is applied to certain controlled mixtures of ingredients used to simulate the effects of fuels. Initially, such additives are injected and the resulting mixtures are used to evaluate whether these new additives will affect the fuel system materials.
