Performance-based requirements for validation of the design prototype and production hydrogen storage and processing systems are also defined in this document. Supplementary testing protocols (for use in type approval or self-certification) are described to qualify designs as meeting specified performance requirements.
The collapse resistance of hydrogen storage and transport systems is beyond the scope of this standard. SAE J2578 contains requirements for collision endurance and vehicle integration for fuel cell vehicles. Defines recommended practices for integrating hydrogen storage and processing systems, incorporates the fuel cell system and electrical systems into the overall Fuel Cell Vehicle. The final design qualification for crash impact resistance is obtained by demonstrating that the vehicle complies with applicable regulations.
The new testing procedures are based on past testing (from previous standards with a history), but justified changes. The tests were also placed in two separate rows. One of the sequences is to ensure that the fiber reinforcement is sufficient to protect against failure in the worst-case scenario. This test series is the Endurance Performance Verification Test and focuses on external damage and cycle fatigue.
