ISO 16900-3 Respiratory Protective Devices, Test and Test Equipment Methods, Part 3: Determination of Particulate Filter Penetration

EUROLAB laboratory provides testing and compliance services within the scope of ISO 16900-3 standard. ISO 16900-3 specifies test methods for particulate filter penetration of separate or integrated filters for respiratory protection devices.

This part of ISO 16900 is designed in addition to the respiratory protection device (RPD) performance standard ISO 17420 (all parts). Test methods are specified for complete devices or parts of devices intended to comply with ISO 17420. If deviations from the test method given in this part of ISO 16900 are necessary, these deviations will be specified in ISO 17420.

A forced aerosol with known properties is produced and passed through the tested filter. The aerosol concentration downstream of the filter divided by the aerosol concentration upstream of the filter as measured in the same type of detector, multiplied by a factor of 100, is the percent penetration of the filter under test.

The sodium chloride (NaCl) aerosol is neutralized by injecting both positive and negative ions into the drying or diluting air stream, thereby bringing the charge distribution to equilibrium, commonly known as the Boltzmann distribution. Paraffin aerosol will not be neutralized as it increases the variability in test results.
