The BS EN 13949 standard has been developed by the British Standards Institute (BSI) to explain the properties, test methods and marking criteria of self-sufficient open circuit diving equipment used with pressurized nitrox and oxygen in respiratory protective devices. The standard describes criteria for self-sufficient open-circuit underwater breathing equipment (nitrox scuba, scuba diving) that uses pressurized nitrox gas with oxygen content above 22 percent or using oxygen. Nitrox is a mixture of nitrogen and oxygen. Nitrox gas is used in diving with enriched air. While this gas has high oxygen, it has low nitrogen at the same rate. Divers who dive with nitrox are more fit than normal weather. As such, the dwelling times are prolonged.

Respirators used with nitrox and oxygen are generally used as direct oxygen tanks or as supplements. There are pressure gauges with precise measurement feature and gas mixtures can be controlled.

In general, diving cylinders are filled with oxygen or respirable air, and gas lines can be depressurized at any time for safety purposes. This equipment is equipped with a high pressure oxygen connection, a breathing air connection and a high pressure nitrox filling connection.
