TS EN 140 Respiratory Protective Devices - Half Masks and Quarter Masks

The BS EN 140 standard has been developed by the British Standards Institute (BSI) to explain the properties, test methods and marking criteria of half masks and quarter masks used in respiratory protective devices. This standard has been published in our country by the Turkish Standards Institute (TSE) with the following title: TS EN 140 Respiratory protective devices - Half masks and quarter masks - Properties, experiments, marking.

This standard describes criteria for half masks and quarter masks used as part of respiratory protective devices, except for escape equipment and diving equipment.

Masks used with respiratory protection devices are essentially three types: full masks, half masks and quarter masks. Full face masks are respirators that cover the eyes, nose, mouth and chin on the face. Half-face masks are respirators that cover the nose, mouth, and chin, excluding the eyes. Quarter masks are respirators that only cover the mouth and nose. Apart from these, there are respiratory masks that only close the mouth. In addition to these masks used only for escape, a clip is also used to keep the nostrils closed.

Which type of mask will ultimately depend entirely on the characteristics of the working environment and the type of activity. For this, firstly, it should be checked whether there is enough oxygen in the ambient air. Then, what kind of pollutants are present in the air, to what extent they are found, and in what forms should be determined. Airborne particles can be gaseous, in the form of particles or a mixture thereof. In addition, it is determined whether the pollutants have sufficient warning properties, what the current occupational exposure limits are, and whether additional personal protective equipment is required.
