The BS EN 143 standard has been developed by the British Standards Institute (BSI) to explain the properties, test methods and marking criteria of dust filters used with respiratory protection devices. This standard has been published in our country by the Turkish Standards Institute (TSE) with the following title: TS EN 143 Protective respirators - Dust filters - Features, experiments and marking.
This standard covers dust filters used with respiratory protection equipment. This standard does not cover dust filters used in protective breathing equipment without external connections. It does not include submersible breathing equipment and paper or cloth filters.
In cases where it is not possible to move away from the environment, three levels of protection have been determined for respiratory protection equipment used to protect workers against particles such as dust, smoke, mist, gas or vapor in liquid or solid state. The first of these is FFP1 dust masks. These provide protection against low levels of particles. These masks protect against concentration up to 4 times the occupational exposure limit or up to 4 times the default protection factor.
The second are FFP2 dust masks. These provide protection against medium levels of particles. These masks protect against concentration up to 12 times occupational exposure limit or up to 10 times the default protection factor. The third is FFP3 dust masks. These provide protection against high levels of particles. These masks protect against concentration up to 50 times occupational exposure limit or 20 times the default protection factor.
Which of the three types of masks to use depends on the type of particles the workers will be exposed to and their concentrations in the air. It is necessary to correctly evaluate the dangers arising from the air in the working environment.
