This standard specifies minimum requirements for demand valve compressed air line respirators for use with a full face mask as a respiratory protective device (RPD).
RPD used in abrasive blasting operations is not covered by this document without additional protective features. Escape RPD is not covered by this standard, although certain requirements are given for use in connection with escape RPD and escape conditions.
The components of the RPD should be easily separated for cleaning, inspection, and testing. All detachable connections shall be easily connected and secured by hand if possible. Any sealant used must be retained when connections and couplings are disconnected during normal use and maintenance.
If a compressed air line breathing apparatus is used with self-contained breathing apparatus meeting the requirements of EN 137 or EN 402, a pass-through device must be provided in the airline device to provide continuous breathable air in the event of failure or disconnection.
When switching occurs, a warning signal must be activated to indicate to the user that breathable air from the self-contained breathing apparatus is being used.
