ISO 5356-2 Anesthetic and Respiratory Equipment, Conical Connectors, Part 2: Standard Test for Screw Thread Weight-Bearing Connectors

ISO 5356-2 specifies dimensional requirements for screw thread weight-bearing conical connectors intended for use with inhalation anesthesia apparatus and ventilators. Such connectors are designed for mounting heavy accessories.

ISO 5356-2 specifies requirements for the following threaded, weight-bearing tapered connectors:

• 22mm connectors;
• 22/15mm coaxial connectors.

The requirements for the application of threaded, weight-bearing tapered connectors are not covered in this part of ISO 5356, but are or will be given in the relevant International standards for certain medical devices and accessories.

While the tapered connectors specified in ISO 5356-1 are satisfactory for lightweight breathing attachments, more substantial connectors are also needed to support heavy or fragile components. Factors governing the design of these connectors include robustness, simplicity, ease of sterilization, and ease of grip and detachment by hand. They must also be compatible with connectors that meet the specified requirements.

ISO 5356-1 and, where possible, should eliminate the possibility of accidental misconnection, but it should remain the responsibility of the user to check that any system in which it is used is properly installed prior to use.
