This standard was published in our country by the Turkish Standards Institute (TSE) with the following title: TS EN ISO 20789 Anesthesia and respiratory devices - Passive humidifiers.
This standard explains the requirements for cold-air or cold-pass humidifiers, also defined as a passive humidifier designed for use in home care and healthcare facilities. This standard was later published by the International Standards Organization (ISO).
This type of equipment is used to increase the water content of the gases delivered to patients. Existing gases used for medical purposes do not contain sufficient moisture and damage patients' upper respiratory tract. Insufficient moisture causes the upper airway to dry, causing the airway to narrow and even become clogged.
Passive humidifier equipment increases the water content of the gases delivered to patients, and the operating system is based on transferring moisture from a liquid reservoir to the room air. Therefore, such passive humidifiers have lower output than active humidifiers. The basic safety and basic performance of active humidifiers fall under the ISO 80601-2-74 standard.
Since the safe use of a passive humidifier depends on the interaction of this equipment with its accessories, this standard sets the total system performance requirements up to the patient connection port. These requirements apply to accessories such as breathing tubes.
In general, passive humidifiers are used in air and air-oxygen mixtures, and a passive humidifier must work with these gases.
