Respirator Compatibility Tests

TS EN ISO 5364 Anesthesia and Respiratory Equipment - Oropharyngeal Tubes

The BS EN 5364 standard has been developed by the British Standards Institute (BSI) to explain the properties and test methods of oropharyngeal tubes located between anesthetic and respiratory equipment.

TS EN ISO 5364 Anestezi ve Solunum Donanımı - Orofaringeal Tüpler

This standard was published in our country by the Turkish Standards Institute (TSE) with the following title: TS EN ISO 5364 Anesthesia and respiratory equipment - Oropharyngeal tubes. This standard was later published by the International Standards Organization (ISO).

This standard describes the airway requirements of oropharyngeal cannulas (or tubes) made of plastic materials, rubber or metal. This standard does not apply to conditions for the flammability of the oropharyngeal airway. Flammability of the oropharyngeal airway is a well-known hazard. This should be addressed by appropriate clinical management, which is outside the scope of the standard.

The oropharyngeal airway is an auxiliary medical device used to protect or open a patient's airway. Thanks to this device, the patient's tongue is prevented from closing the trachea in a way that prevents breathing. Oropharyngeal are briefly plastic, rubber or metallic devices designed to extend from the airway between the base of the tongue and the pharyngeal wall.

The TS EN ISO 5364 standard describes the size and other requirements for the oropharyngeal airway. The airway size is the length necessary to keep the bottom of the tongue forward, for example, to prevent the airway from being blocked by soft tissues.

If the patient does not have spontaneous breathing, ventilation should be attempted to ensure continued breathing. It is the oropharyngeal cannulas that provide this. The main reason for airway obstructions is that the tongue escapes backwards and prevents air flow.

Within the scope of breathing apparatus compatibility tests carried out by our organization EUROLAB, testing services in accordance with TS EN ISO 5364 standard are also provided.
