Particle Filter Efficiency, Sodium Chloride (NIOSH STP)

Particle filtration efficiency test is performed to evaluate the non-viable particle retention or filtration efficiency of the filter media and other filtration devices at submicron levels. This test is applied on face masks and filter materials.

Particle Filter Efficiency, Sodium Chloride (NIOSH STP)

The following two standards have been developed by the American Testing and Materials Organization (ASTM):

  • ASTM F2100-19e1 Standard specification for the performance of materials used in medical face masks
  • ASTM F2299-03 Standard test method for determining the initial efficiency of substances used in medical face masks to penetration with particles using latex spheres

Particle filtration efficiency test is also called latex particle challenge. Generally, tests are carried out according to ASTM F2100 standard and the basic principle of ASTM F2299 standard is followed.

The ASTM F2100 standard describes the classifications, performance requirements, and test methods for materials used in the construction of medical face masks used in healthcare such as surgery and patient care. Medical face mask material performance is generally based on the following tests: bacterial filtration efficiency, differential pressure, submicron particle filtration efficiency and flammability tests.

The test method described in the ASTM F2299 standard measures the filtration efficiency of materials used in medical face masks in a controlled air flow room.

In addition, sodium chloride tests are performed to verify compliance with NIOSH standards. Sodium chloride aerosol challenge NIOSH respirator pre-qualification test is widely applied to evaluate the particle penetration and air flow resistance properties of various filtration materials. Masks must be prequalified before they can be submitted to NIOSH for certification. These tests are performed for masks requiring N95 respirator approval.
