Medical Face Masks, Bacterial Filtration Efficiency (EN 14683)

The EN 14683 standard, a European standard, describes the characteristics and test methods of medical face masks for bacterial filtration efficiency. This standard has been published in our country by the Turkish Standards Institute (TSE) with the following title: TS EN 14683 Medical face masks - Requirements and test methods.

Medical Face Masks, Bacterial Filtration Efficiency (EN 14683)

Filter efficiency simply refers to the percentage of a filter removing contaminants from the environment. The efficiency assessment can be quantity, weight or mass, number of particles, volume, and interestingly the cross-sectional area of the particles. In advanced laboratories, filtration efficiency, bacterial filtration efficiency and viral filtration efficiency are tested to evaluate surgical face masks and other medical filtration masks. These tests are based on certain standards. For example, the ASTM F2101-01 standard developed by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) uses a staphylococcus aureus aerosol to evaluate the bacterial filtration efficiency of face mask materials. This bacterium is 0.8 microns in diameter.

The European Standardization Committee (CEN) is trying to align the EN 14683 bacterial filtration efficiency standard test requirements for medical face masks with the requirements of the ASTM F2101 standard. The aim is for manufacturers to test face masks only once to meet both requirements.

The bacterial filtration efficiency test is performed on filtering materials and devices designed to protect against biological aerosols such as face masks, surgical gowns, caps and air filters. This test is also performed for surgical masks and complies with ASTM F2100 and EN 14683 standards. The bacterial filtration efficiency test determines the filtration efficiency by comparing the bacterial control numbers with the test substance waste numbers.

Medical face masks, bacterial filtration efficiency (EN 14683) testing services are also provided by our organization within the framework of respiratory protection equipment testing services.
