ISO 23269-1 provides performance specifications for emergency escape breathing devices (EEBD) required by regulation in Part D of Part II-2000 of the 1974 International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) as amended in 2.
These devices are designed to provide the air or oxygen necessary to escape from living and machinery spaces with a hazardous atmosphere. It is not designed for firefighting, entering oxygen deficient spaces or tanks, or to be worn by firefighters.
In the event of a burst or rupture of the pressure gauge, a pressure gauge should be provided with a suitable blow off packing so that the discharge is away from the user. The discharge seal must be protected from dirt and mechanical damage.
For educational purposes only, counterfeit devices and components shall not be interchangeable with operational devices or components and shall be manufactured and marked in such a way that they are clearly distinguishable from operational devices and cannot be mistaken for mistakenly.
A full set of EEBD or EEBD components likely to be exposed to flame during actual use will be tested by passing a defined flame once and the effects of the flame on the EEBD observed.
The manufacturer of the EEBD or any component of the EEBD will provide appropriate instructions for operation, maintenance and storage. Instructions shall be provided in the language or languages deemed necessary by the competent authority. Instructions shall be provided in a suitable format for inclusion in the ship's training manual as a minimum. Brief instructions or a diagram clearly demonstrating its use should be clearly printed on the EEBD.
