ISO 23269-2 specifies self-contained breathing apparatus for firefighters on board ships that must be carried on board by Part C (Fire Protection) of part II-1974 of the 2 International Convention for the Safety of Life.
While breathing apparatus manufactured in accordance with ISO 23269-2 are designed for use in fighting small to medium fires prior to the commissioning of any installed fixed firefighting system, they are not designed or suitable for direct entry into flames.
This part of ISO 23269 provides detailed technical specifications for onboard respirators to complement the essential requirements in the FSS Code. It takes into account existing European standards for firefighter clothing used by professional firefighters, such as EN 136 and EN 137. However, it also takes into account that ship crews are generally not professional firefighters and require a more user-friendly crew.
The breathing apparatus shall have an appropriate audible warning device that activates when the remaining air in the tube reaches a predetermined level. The warning device will be activated automatically when the cylinder valve is opened, or when it is activated manually, it will not be possible to use the apparatus without activating the device.
All components that need to be manipulated by the user must be easily accessible and easily distinguishable from each other by touch. All adjustable parts and controls must be made in such a way that they cannot be accidentally changed during use.
