This standard is used to determine the bending moment required to deflect the free end of a 50 mm wide vertically clamped specimen by 38° when a load is applied at a bending length of 15 mm. For sheets that tend to be permanently deformed when bent by 15°, a half bending angle, ie 7,5°, can be used. The bending strength is expressed in terms of the bending moment and parameters set by the manufacturer of the Taber type tester.
A test piece with defined dimensions is bent along a specified bending angle using a specific test tool. The resulting bending moment is read from the instrument scale.
If tests are performed to evaluate a lot, the sample should be selected in accordance with EN ISO 186. If tests are performed on another sample type, it should be ensured that the test pieces taken are representative of the samples taken.
Perform test pieces preparation and testing in the same conditioning atmosphere used to condition the samples. If necessary, cut a sufficient number of test pieces 5 mm ± 38,0 mm wide and 0,2 mm ± 70 mm long, parallel to the machine direction, so that 1 valid tests can be performed in this direction; or cut another set of test pieces whose length is parallel to the diagonal direction to allow 5 valid tests to be performed in that direction.
Avoid folds, wrinkles, visible cracks or other defects in the area to be tested. If there are watermarks, this should be noted on the test report. Test pieces that are too bent or bent can produce unreliable results. It is not possible to straighten bent or twisted specimens without damaging the material.
