This specification specifies the method recommended by the CIE for measuring and determining the color rendering properties of light sources based on the resulting color bursts of test objects, briefly referred to as the Test-Color Method.
This method should be considered the primary method for evaluating the iso-quad forming properties of light sources and is recommended for both type testing and testing of individual lamps.
This specification applies to most general purpose illuminators (excluding predominantly monochromatic radiation sources such as e.g. tungsten filament lamps, tubular and compact fluorescent lamps, and all other gaseous discharge electric low pressure sodium). This method can also be applied to modified daylight.
To apply the recommended Color Test Method, the resulting color bursts for appropriately selected test color samples must be calculated. A set of eight test color samples is determined based on their spectral luminance factors to calculate the Overall Color Rendering Index. These examples cover the hue, are moderate in saturation, and are about the same in lightness. Data is also provided for six additional test color samples, representing a strong red, yellow, green, and blue, as well as tan and foliage colors. Color rendering indexes can be found from color bursts.
