All kinds of materials in metallic, non-metallic or composite structure, which are used in the industry to meet the raw material and production needs of the enterprises and to achieve a certain purpose, are called materials. For example, copper used as a conductor, steel used in the production of gear wheels, or brick, sand, cement used in construction are all materials. Enterprises should always choose the material suitable for their purpose and for this purpose they should know the mechanical properties of the material. During operation, the structure of the material is often changed by a number of processes such as thermal, thermomechanical and thermochemical processes. This is also important for determining the most suitable production method to be chosen.

The atomic structure of the materials ensures that the materials are classified as metals, ceramics and polymers and determines the physical and mechanical properties of the material. Making the right material selection is critical in engineering studies in terms of features such as cost, strength and life of the system or structure.

Metal materials have high thermal and electrical conductivity, are easy to form and resistant to impacts. For example, steel, iron, aluminum and zinc are metal materials. Ceramic materials have low thermal and electrical conductivity, although they are hard, their impact resistance is low, their resistance is high at high temperature. For example, porcelain, glass and brick are ceramic materials. Polymeric materials have low thermal and electrical conductivity, they cannot be used at high temperatures, but are very resistant to chemical effects. Composite materials are obtained by combining different materials. They are light, strong and high temperature resistant materials. It has quite different usage areas.
