Automotive Type Approval Tests

Automotive type approval tests and certification studies implemented within the framework of both European Union directives and United Nations European Economic Commission regulations are aimed at providing assurance that motor vehicle samples meet the relevant standards and that mass production will continue under the same conditions. These testing and approval processes must be done by a third-party organization that acts impartially and independently. In these directives and regulations, technical services that will carry out the tests and institutions that will give approvals are appointed. Within the European Union, automotive type approval provided by one country is also accepted by other countries.

Automotive Type Approval Tests

The following legal regulations constitute the basis of the automotive type approval tests and certification works: Motor Vehicles and Trailers Type Approval Regulation, Agricultural or Forestry Tractors Type Approval Regulation and Two and Three Wheeled Motor Vehicles Type Approval Regulation.

Within the scope of automotive type approval studies, motor vehicles are grouped as follows in the Traffic Regulation:

  • Category L is a motor vehicle with fewer than four wheels. For example, vehicles of the L1 group are two-wheeled motor vehicles with a cylinder volume of less than 50 cm3 and a maximum speed of not more than 45 km per hour. Motorcycles, scooters and ATVs belong to this group.
  • Category M are vehicles intended to carry at least four wheels and motorized passengers. For example, vehicles of the M1 group are motor vehicles with a maximum of eight seats outside the driver and intended for passenger transport. Cars, minibuses, midibuses and buses are included in this group.
  • N category is at least four wheeled and motorized load carrying vehicles. For example, vehicles of the N1 group are motorized load carrying vehicles with a maximum mass not exceeding 3,5 tons. Trucks and vans are included in this group.
  • Category O includes trailers and semi-trailers. For example, O1 group vehicles are trailers with a maximum mass not exceeding 0,75 tons.
  • T category vehicles are agricultural and forestry tractors.
