Product type approval is a procedure for approval of product design, including initial drawings and prototype test performance, to comply with the criteria in the relevant legal regulations and domestic and foreign standard requirements. Basically, once the product design has been evaluated and approved, the same design applies to all subsequent production processes. Generally, type approval applies to all products, but is particularly suitable for standardly designed and routinely manufactured products such as motors, electrical cables, transformers, safety valves for cargo tanks.
Type approval is mandatory for some products and accessories. For example, some European Union directives require product type approval. In addition, product type approval can be requested voluntarily by the manufacturer.
The product type approval certification process carried out by accredited organizations consists of certain steps. For example, examination of technical documents, pre-approval of drawings where necessary, determination of test program, identification of test laboratory, product type tests, review of test reports and issue of product type approval document.
After a product type approval has been obtained, the subsequent production runs no longer require new tests and approvals. However, depending on the products, further validation and testing may be required to evaluate the products' compliance with approved prototypes. When a product is type approved, the validity period of the certificate is generally five years. At the end of this period, product type approval tests and certificate must be renewed. In this process, verification is made on the technical documentation provided by the manufacturer and the product type approval certificate is rearranged. However, if significant changes have been made to the product by the manufacturer or there have been significant changes in the reference standards, additional tests may be required.i.
