The United States Coast Guard (USCG for short) is the main government agency responsible for ensuring safety and environmental management at U.S. harbors and seaways.
This organization also develops and publishes legal regulations and standards governing the safe design and construction of shipbuilding, stability, electrical and mechanical systems, life saving systems, fire safety equipment and other ship and ship equipment. It also makes arrangements including their approval and laboratory controls.
The US Coast Guard Agency also serves on the International Maritime Organization (IMO) committees and participates in policy-making, technical explanations and appeals. The categories of ships subject to control are: cruise ships (including maritime school ships, cruise ships and fishing boats), tank ships (including tank barges), cargo ships (including container ships, cargo ships and ROROs) and special-use ships (mobile sea drilling ships, naval supply ships, oceanographic research ships, oil spill response ships, maritime school ships and sailing school ships).
