In the EN ISO 13935-1 standard developed by the International Standards Organization (ISO), a test method is defined to determine the maximum strength of the seams when the force is applied perpendicular to the seam.
This standard describes a test method known as the strip test. This method is mainly applied to woven textile fabrics, including fabrics that exhibit stretch properties provided by the presence of an elastomeric fiber, mechanical or chemical treatment. This test method can also be applied to fabrics produced with other techniques. The EN ISO 13935-1 standard does not normally apply to geotextiles, non-woven fabrics, coated fabrics, textile-glass woven fabrics and fabrics made from carbon fiber or polyolefin tape yarns.
This test method applies only to straight seams, not curved seams. The method is also limited to the use of constant propagation velocity testing machines.
For the purposes of the EN ISO 13935-1 standard, the strip test refers to the tensile test in which the entire width of the test specimen is held in the jaws of the testing machine. The constant spreading velocity testing machine is a tensile testing machine equipped with a fixed gripper and another gripper that moves at a constant velocity throughout the test. The entire test system is almost completely free from bias. Maximum force for seam rupture is the maximum amount of force recorded for a seam perpendicular to the direction of elongation for seam rupture during a tensile test under certain conditions.
