The formaldehyde content is taken as the amount of free formaldehyde and formaldehyde extracted from the skin by hydrolysis in a water extract under standard conditions of use.

The process is selective. Formaldehyde is separated from other aldehydes and ketones as a derivative by liquid chromatography and its amount is determined. The detected free formaldehyde and formaldehyde are hydrolyzed during extraction to yield free formaldehyde.

The sample is decomposed with a detergent solution at 40°C. The eluate is mixed with 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazine, where aldehydes and ketones react to give the corresponding hydrazones. They are separated by a reverse phase HPLC method, which is detected and quantified at 360 nm.
