CEN TR 14823 Durability of Wood and Wood Based Products - Quantitative Determination of Pentachlorophenol in Wood - Gas Chromatographic Method

The method is applicable to all PCP-treated wood and wood-based materials, as well as for the analysis of waste timber based on PCP content.

The method has a quantification limit that corresponds to 100 µg PCP per kilogram of wood material, expressed as dry matter. The method described has a measuring range of up to 25 mg/kg dry matter PCP content. These numbers refer to the given example.

Currently, a standardized method for the analysis of pentachlorophenol (PCP) in wood is not recognized in Europe. Only a few national standards exist worldwide, for example BS 5666, Part 6 and AWPA Standard A-5, and these methods are designed for the analysis of treated wood with the PCP levels necessary to prevent the treated wood from being degraded by fungi.

Pentachlorophenol is extracted from wood material using methanol. The extracted pentachlorophenol is converted to pentachlorophenol acetate by derivatizing an aliquot of the extract with acetic anhydride in aqueous potassium carbonate solution. The acetate derivative formed is extracted from this aqueous solution with n-hexane and analyzed by gas chromatography with electron capture detection.
