This standard provides a basis for evaluating sunscreen products for the protection of human skin against UVA radiation caused by solar ultraviolet rays.
This standard covers the procedure for determining the Ultraviolet A Protection Factor (UVAPF) of a sunscreen product using the permanent pigment darkening method according to the principles recommended by the Japan Cosmetic Industry Association (JCIA) in 1995. The result of this testing method may be: Used to determine the UVA classification of topical sunscreen products according to local regulatory requirements.
The test method outlined in this standard is derived primarily from the UVAPF test methods developed by the JCIA. Changes have been made to comply with updated International Standards for the determination of sun protection factor, without compromising the integrity of the basic principles of the test method.
The UVAPF testing method is similar to the testing method used to determine the SPF of a sunscreen product. However, it uses only the UVA portion of a xenon arc lamp solar simulator with defined and known output to determine the protection provided by sunscreen products on human skin in the UVA portion of the spectrum.
While one part of each subject's skin is exposed to UVA radiation without any protection, another (different) part is exposed after application of the sunscreen product being tested. Another section is revealed after application of a UVAPF reference sunscreen formulation used to validate the procedure.
