DIN 53160-1 Determination of Color Fastness of Articles for Common Use - Part 1: Test with Artificial Saliva

This standard does not apply to articles whose parts provide colorant as agreed. This standard specifies the method of testing the resistance of artificial saliva to articles of daily use. The method is particularly suitable for articles of daily use that are intended to be taken orally or when used are intended to be taken orally or come into contact with mucous membranes.

This test determines whether coloring agents can pass from daily use products to the mouth or mucous membranes. This standard does not apply to articles intended to come into contact with foodstuffs, or to parts of articles of daily use whose function is the release of coloring matter, or to articles of daily use where this applies to all of them.

Examples of the latter are wax, crayons, and pencil tips. The test method can be applied to all articles in daily use, regardless of the applied coloring procedure (eg dyeing, coating). Possible mechanical wear, eg exposure of a colored layer after mechanical abrasion of a topcoat, is not taken into account.
