EN 113-2 Durability of Wood and Wood-Based Products, Part 2: Standard Test for Evaluation of Structural or Enhanced Durability

EUROLAB laboratory provides testing and compliance services within the scope of EN 113-2 standard. This standard specifies a test method for determining a wood's inherent resistance to wood-destroying basidiomycetes cultured in a malt extract agar medium. The method is applicable to all types of timber.

Also, this method can be used to test modified wood. The test method described in this standard is applicable to certain types of wood, commercial sawn timber, wood-based materials, woods treated with preservatives and modified woods, both thermally and chemically modified woods. However, this standard is not intended to determine the effectiveness of wood preservatives used to prevent rot.

Determining the effectiveness of wood preservatives used to prevent rotting is within the scope of EN 113-1. However, in addition, and with some modifications, it may be possible in some cases to test treated wood by the method described here.

Test specimens of tested timber and test specimens of reference timber are attacked by pure cultures of basidiomycetes. After a predetermined incubation period under defined conditions, the percentage loss in dry mass of the test samples is used to establish the wood durability classification of the wood under test.
