This standard specifies the shapes, dimensions and tolerances of cube, cylinder and prism cast concrete test specimens and the molds required to produce them.
Calibrated molds shall be made of steel or cast iron, which will be the reference materials. If the dies are manufactured from other materials, in-use performance test data will be available showing long-term equivalence with calibrated steel or cast iron dies. All parts of the calibrated molds shall be strong enough to prevent deterioration during assembly and use. With the possible exception of the base plate, the components of the mold shall have identifying marks.
EN 12390-1 is a European standard that specifies the shape, dimensions and other requirements for concrete specimens and molds used for testing the compressive strength of hardened concrete.
EN 12390-1 ensures that concrete samples are made to consistent sizes and properties, providing accurate and reliable test results. This standard is an important part of ensuring the quality of concrete used in construction projects. The nominal size for each shape of the test sample, cube, cylinder and prism should be chosen so that it is at least three and a half times the maximum aggregate size in the sample.
The perpendicularity tolerance of the prism edges as cast is 0,5 mm. In the bending strength test, the tolerances for the smoothness of the surface that will contact the rollers are 0,2 mm. For the samples to be used in the tensile splitting strength test, the linearity tolerance on the load bearing surface is 0,2 mm.
