A mass propelled by a spring strikes a plunger in contact with the surface of the structure or sample to be tested. The test result is expressed as a number in terms of the mass's rebound distance. A number can also be obtained in terms of the difference in energy or velocity before and after the mass strikes.
It consists of a mass of spring-loaded hammer that, when released, strikes a plunger in contact with the surface to be tested. The rebound distance of the hammer mass from the piston or other rebound values should be measured.
The manufacturer's instructions and any other equipment should be used to ensure that the longitudinal axis of the piston is perpendicular to the surface of the anvil at the moment of impact. Different hammers with the same recoil value on the reference anvil may not produce the same results in the field if the resulting recoil value is above the hammer's normal operating range.
The rebound number of the test site should be taken as the median of all readings and, if necessary, adjusted to take into account the orientation of the hammer according to the manufacturer's instructions. The recoil number must be expressed as an integer.
