This test method details the method for evaluating the friction properties of coated fabrics. The test consists of measuring the force required to move a slide on the surface of the coated fabric test sample and determining the static and dynamic friction coefficient.
A slide is attached to a strain gauge and connected to an autograph recorder. The slide is caused to move against either a horizontal bed or against the test specimen rigidly mounted on the base of the slide. The force that initiates the sled's motion and then maintains a constant velocity is measured.
The dynamic friction coefficient is the coefficient calculated from the ratio of the force required to maintain a constant velocity between two surfaces in contact to the vertical force acting on the two surfaces. It is the coefficient of static friction calculated from the ratio of the force required to cause the tangential separation of two stationary surfaces to the perpendicular force acting on the two surfaces.
Class I testing machine, as specified in EN ISO 7500-1, the tensile testing machine shall be equipped with means to read and record both the force required to initiate motion and then the force required to maintain a constant speed.
