EN 50642 Cable Management Systems - Test Method for Halogen Content

EUROLAB, with its state-of-the-art accredited laboratories and expert team, provides precise and fast testing services within the scope of EN 50642 testing. This European standard specifies a method for the determination of the halogen content in Cable Management System (CMS) components or products made of polymeric materials. The determination is made by analysis of combustion and subsequent combustion product by Ion Chromatography.

EN 50642 Cable Management Systems - Test Method for Halogen Content

This standard specifies how CMS components or products can be declared halogen-free. This European standard is for environmental performance only. Compliance with this standard does not imply the absence of toxicity, corrosivity or opacity or other reaction to fire properties of the smoke produced. If any of these properties are to be evaluated, appropriate standards may be used. The detection limit for this test method is typically 0,025 g of halogen per kg (0,002% 5%).

The test sample is oxidized by burning in a closed system containing oxygen under pressure using a calorimetric decomposition bomb (bomb). Almost all of the halogens in the compounds are converted to halides (fluoride, chloride, bromide and iodide), and almost all of them are dissolved in an absorption solution. The detection limit for this test method is typically 0,025 g of halogen per kg (0,002% 5%). It can be used for poorly burning samples, so a combustion enhancer can be used.

Halogen-containing organic compounds are known under several names. Different terms are used, such as organohalogens, halogenated compounds, halocarbons or organic halides. All are substances in which one or more carbon atoms are bonded to one or more halogen atoms by covalent bonds.

Among organohalogens, some are effective flame retardants. Chlorinated, brominated and fluorinated organohalogens are used separately or in combination. Organohalogens will be converted to inorganic halides by combustion and then absorbed or dissolved in an aqueous solution. This allows for subsequent analysis of the halogen content.
