EN ISO 1133 Plastics - Test for Determination of Melt Mass Flow Rate (MFR) and Melt Volume Flow Rate (MVR) of Thermoplastics

This part of EN ISO 1133 specifies two procedures for determining the melt mass flow rate (MFR) and melt volume flow rate (MVR) of thermoplastic materials under certain temperature and load conditions. Procedure A is a mass measurement method. Procedure B is a displacement measurement method. Normally, test conditions for melt flow rate measurement are specified in the material standard with reference to this part of ISO 1133.

MVR is particularly useful when comparing materials with different filler content and when comparing filled materials with unfilled thermoplastics. MFR can be determined from MVR measurements and vice versa, provided the melt density at the test temperature is known.

EN ISO 1133 is also applicable to thermoplastics where the rheological behavior is affected during measurement by events such as hydrolysis (chain cutting), condensation and crosslinking, but only if the extent of this effect is limited and repeatability is within an acceptable range. EN ISO 1133 is not suitable for materials that exhibit a significantly affected rheological behavior during testing. In such cases, EN ISO 1133-2 applies.

The melt mass flow rate (MFR) and melt volume flow rate (MVR) are determined by extruding the molten material from the cylinder of a plastometer from a die of specified length and diameter under predetermined temperature and load conditions.
