This International standard specifies two methods (in undiluted sample) for the determination of the phenol index in waters of different origin (such as groundwater, surface water, leachate and wastewater) at mass concentrations of 0,01 mg/l to 1 mg/l. In special cases, the application range can be adapted by changing the operating conditions.
Methods for determining water quality using flow analysis and automated wet chemical procedures are particularly suitable for processing large sample batches at high analysis frequency.

Both methods involve automatic dosing of the sample into a flow system (manifold); where the analytes in the sample react with the reagent solutions as they pass through the manifold. The phenol index is an analytical rule. It represents a group of aromatic compounds that form colored condensation products under certain reaction conditions. The analytical result is expressed in terms of phenol concentration.
This International standard describes two methods: determination of phenol index after extraction (without distillation) and determination of phenol index after distillation (without extraction).
