This standard specifies a method for evaluating the persistence of a flame applied to the edge of a wick of non-combustible material immersed in refractory liquid.
The test is concerned with the bulk behavior of a liquid, which can provide appropriate information for safe transport and storage. This test does not determine the behavior of the fire resistant liquid spray for which ISO 15029 should be used. This International standard specifies one of two basic measures for fire resistance and may be included in the regulations governing their use in Luxembourg. This International standard does not apply to certain water-containing liquids or emulsions that do not adhere to the test board.
The test methodology set forth in this standard is listed in specifications for fire resistant hydraulic fluids such as ISO 12922, where it defines minimum requirements for flame retardant and less flammable hydraulic fluids not generally used for industrial hydrostatic and hydrodynamic systems.
A long non-combustible aluminosilicate sheet is immersed in the liquid under test and placed in a chamber with the liquid with one side exposed. A small flame is applied to the exposed edge of the sheet and the persistence of the flame is measured within seconds after the igniting flame is removed. A total of six determinations are made for each of the five different periods of flame application. The persistence of the igniter flame for these five different application periods is calculated and the result is the largest of these averages.
