EN ISO 15027-2 specifies performance and safety requirements for clothing abandoned in emergency situations in work and leisure activities to protect the wearer's body, including the head, hands and feet, against the effects of cold water immersion, such as cold shock and hypothermia.
This part of EN ISO 15027 has been prepared to meet the needs of people performing certain activities on or near water. Leaving clothing manufactured and maintained in accordance with this part of EN ISO 15027 will protect against cold shock and delay the onset of hypothermia.
The full immersion system (the suit and clothing worn under the suit) must be able to keep the wearer alive long enough for rescue teams to find and rescue him. An individual's estimated duration of thermal protection will depend on water temperature and wave conditions as well as their physiology. This section of EN ISO 15027 details recommended minimum insulation levels and the relevant water temperatures at which they will be used.
This part of EN ISO 15027 is intended to serve as the minimum performance requirement for manufacturers, purchasers and users of such safety equipment and aims to ensure that the equipment provides effective performance when in use. Abandonment clothing should not compromise safety by causing undue discomfort that could lead to impaired performance.
The abandonment suit shall not have any features that could harm the operation of other lifesaving equipment that may be used. In particular, any part of the garment that could pose a tripping hazard should be appropriately covered, protected or restrained.
