The purpose of this standard is to provide a consistent and systematic way of specifying mounting tools for screws and nuts. The notations in the relevant ISO standards are compatible with this document. This standard covers the most common mounting tools for screws and nuts. The terms used have been chosen to fit the structure of this group of tools.
This standard brings together a variety of information for each product, including examples of typical appearances, the type of screw or nut interface the tool can be used with, and the identification number. When ISO standard numbers are shown in bold, they define the primary requirements for the vehicle. Numbers in italics are ISO standards that contain additional information or requirements.
This standard covers torsion testing of machine-operated sockets only. Currently, the torsion test and hardness values given in this document ensure that sockets have a reasonable impact life if the appropriate tool is used. An impact test or durability test is desirable, but there is currently no procedure for standardization. This will be an issue for a future revision of this standard.
