EN ISO 3035 Corrugated Board - Standard Test for Determination of Flat Crush Resistance

EUROLAB, with its state-of-the-art accredited laboratories and expert team, provides precise and fast testing services within the scope of EN ISO 3035 testing. This International standard specifies a method for determining the flat crush resistance of corrugated board used in the manufacture of shipping containers. This International standard is applicable to single sided and single wall (double sided) corrugated board.

EN ISO 3035 Corrugated Board - Standard Test for Determination of Flat Crush Resistance

This International Standard does not apply to double-wall (double-double-sided) corrugated board and micro-corrugated corrugated board, as the end point of the test is not clearly defined or observable.

Fibreboard shipping containers can be subjected to compression forces in the thickness direction as part of the manufacturing process, as well as during transportation or storage. These forces can compress the groove structure and reduce the structural integrity (stack strength) of the corrugated material. Resistance to such crushing is an important measure of the container's performance characteristics.

A corrugated cardboard test piece is subjected to an increasing force applied perpendicular to the surface by a compression tester with two flat and parallel thrust plates until the groove collapses.

Sampling should be done in accordance with ISO 186. If test specimens are to be taken from corrugated shipping containers, they should be taken from areas away from nicks, seams and closures, but may contain printed areas that reflect its general condition.

Sheets can tilt sideways due to the relative lateral movement of the rollers, especially damage to test pieces during cutting or a natural defect in the corrugated board. Check the first two by testing other test pieces on the flat crush tester with the direction of the grooves at right angles to the original direction and making sure to take great care in cutting. If test pieces still fail in bent grooves, the corrugated board is likely to be faulty.
