EN ISO 9239-1 Tests for Response to Fire for Floors, Part 1: Standard Test for Determining Combustion Behavior Using a Radiant Heat Source

EUROLAB laboratory provides testing and compliance services within the scope of EN ISO 9239-1 standard. EN ISO 9239-1 specifies a method for assessing the upwind combustion behavior and flame spread of horizontally mounted floors that are exposed to a heat flow radiant gradient in a test chamber when ignited by pilot flames.

EN ISO 9239-1 Tests for Response to Fire for Floors, Part 1: Standard Test for Determining Combustion Behavior Using a Radiant Heat Source

This method applies to all flooring types. for example textile carpet, cork, wood, rubber and plastic coverings and coatings. Results obtained with this method reflect the performance of the flooring, including any substrate if used. Modifications of the underlayment, adhesion to a substrate, other changes to the underlayment or flooring may affect test results.

EN ISO 9239-1 applies to the measurement and characterization of flooring in response to heat and flame under controlled laboratory conditions. It should not be used alone to identify or assess the fire hazard or fire risk of floors under actual fire conditions.

The measurements in the test method in this part of EN ISO 9239 provide a basis for estimating one aspect of the fire exposure behavior of floors. The applied radiant flux simulates the levels of thermal radiation likely to strike the floor of a corridor whose upper surfaces are heated by flames or hot gases, or both, in the early stages of a fire developing under upwind flame in an adjacent room or compartment.

The test specimen is placed in a horizontal position under a gas-fired radiant panel with a 30° inclination, where it is exposed to a defined heat flow. A pilot flame is applied to the hotter end of the sample. After ignition, any developing flame fronts are noted and a record is made of the time it takes for the flame front to travel horizontally along the length of the sample to propagate over defined distances. If necessary, the smoke development during the test is recorded as the light transmission in the exhaust chimney.
