EN ISO 9239-2 specifies a method for evaluating the combustion behavior of horizontally mounted flooring systems subjected to a heat flow gradient in a test chamber when ignited by pilot flames. The radiant heat gradient is higher than that described in EN ISO 9239-1 to simulate conditions in a corridor adjacent to a room with a fully developed fire (post-flashover).
This method can be applied to all types of flooring and coverings such as textile carpets, cork, wood, rubber and plastic coatings. Results obtained with this method reflect the performance of the flooring, including any substrate if used. Changes in support, adhesion to a substrate, underlayment, or other changes to the floor may affect test results.
This part of EN ISO 9239 applies to the measurement and description of the properties of flooring in response to heat and flame under controlled laboratory conditions. It should not be used alone to identify or assess the fire hazard or fire risk of floors under actual fire conditions.
Attention is drawn to the possibility that toxic or harmful gases may be produced during the exposure of the samples.
