This method and the methods described in other parts of ISO 1833 are generally applicable to fibers in any textile form. When certain textile forms are excluded, they are listed within the scope of the relevant section.
Methods for the quantitative analysis of fiber blends are based on two main processes, manual separation of fibers and chemical separation.
It is preferable to use the manual separation method whenever possible, as it generally gives more accurate results than the chemical method. For example, in the case of yarns consisting of several elements, each consisting of only one type of fiber, or woven fabrics in which the fiber is the fiber, the component fibers can be used for all textiles that do not form a close blend. Warp is a different type from weft or dissolvable knitted fabrics made up of different types of threads.
In general, the methods described in different parts of ISO 1833 are based on the selective resolution of a single component. After removal of a component, the insoluble residue is weighed and the proportion of the soluble component calculated from the mass loss. This standard gives information that is common to the analysis of all fiber blends by this method, regardless of their composition.
This information is intended to be used in conjunction with other parts of ISO 1833; these parts contain detailed procedures applicable to specific fiber blends. Sometimes, where an analysis is based on a principle other than selective resolution, full details are given in the relevant section.
