This standard provides guidance for the counting or detection of microorganisms present in a cosmetic product impregnated or coated on a substrate (e.g. wipes and masks) where sampling and microbiological action of the manufactured product presents particular challenges for microbiological sampling.
The principle of this standard can also be applied to testing similar products (eg pillow, impregnated sponge, etc.) or applicators (eg brush, puff, sponge, etc.) by modifying the procedure accordingly.
For technical reasons, current standards in cosmetic microbiology may not be applicable to impregnated or coated cosmetic products such as wet wipes and masks where there is no direct access to the formulation. Depending on the product form or delivery, there is a need to adapt these standards to assess the microbiological quality of these products.
The method determines the population of viable microorganisms by counting colonies on a non-selective agar medium and the presence or absence of growth of certain microorganisms after enrichment.
Experimental conditions should be evaluated to ensure that the method does not affect the viability of microorganisms and the recovery of bioburden from the sample, and should include verification of the effectiveness of neutralization.
In order to ensure product quality and safety for the consumer, an appropriate microbiological risk assessment should be carried out to identify the types of cosmetic products to which this document applies.
