A gas cylinder is a pressure vessel for the storage and containment of gases above atmospheric pressure. High pressure gas cylinders are also called bottles. The contents stored inside the cylinder may be in the form of a compressed gas, vapor-on-liquid, supercritical liquid, or dissolved in a substrate material, depending on the physical properties of the contents. A typical gas cylinder design is elongated, standing upright on a flattened lower end, with valve and connector at the top to connect to the receiver apparatus.
In this context the term cylinder should not be confused with tank ; the second is an open top or vented container that stores liquids under gravity.
