This standard specifies a method for the determination of the elongation at break and tensile strength at break of frayed strips of woven textile glass fabrics conditioned in a standard test atmosphere.

The method is applicable to non-impregnated textile glass fabrics and to textile glass fabrics impregnated with sizing or hardening agents, but not to fabrics coated with rubber or plastic.

A strip of woven fabric is stretched to break by a suitable mechanical apparatus that displays the breaking force and elongation at break. The fracture force and elongation at break can be determined either by taking direct readings from the gauge instruments on the apparatus or from an autographic force-elongation curve.

The faces of the clamps should preferably be smooth, but when specimens cannot be held satisfactorily even with packaging, serrated or slotted clamps may be used. Paper, felt, leather or plastic or rubber sheets can be used as chin filling materials.
