This standard does not set limits for phthalate esters. It is intended to be used as a method standard in conformity assessment. Therefore, the user of this standard is advised to be aware of the relevant national requirements.

In some countries, phthalate ester requirements for toys also apply to children's products, and product materials for children are often similar to those of toys. Covering a variety of materials, this document therefore applies to both toys and children's products.

Given the diversity of laws and regulations in different countries, this International Standard does not set limits for phthalate esters. It is intended to be used as a method standard in conformity assessment. Therefore, the user of this part of ISO 8124 is advised to be aware of the relevant national requirements.

While in some countries the phthalate ester requirements for toys may also apply to children's products, and children's product materials are generally similar to those of toys, this part of ISO 8124, which covers a variety of materials, is applicable to both toys and children's products.

The test portion of a toy or children's product is mechanically broken into small pieces which are then extracted by means of a Soxhlet extractor or a dichloromethane solvent extractor; thereafter, the phthalate esters in the extract are determined qualitatively and quantitatively by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS).

Two optional calibration methods, External Standard (ES) and Internal Standard (IS), are described below. ES or IS can be used for calibration. Laboratories can choose the appropriate calibration method based on their best practice.
