TAPPI T-541 Standard Test for Internal Bond Strength (Z-Direction Tensile) of Carton

This method describes a procedure for measuring the internal fiber bond strength (tensile strength in the z direction) of paperboard using an instrument that applies a normal shearing force to a 6,45 cm2 (1 in2) sample. The procedure consists of double application.

The sample is then placed between two plates and compressed evenly across the entire surface area of ​​the sample. A uniform stress is then applied over the entire test area in a direction perpendicular to the plane of the sample (z-direction) to effect separation. The test is for cartons and some papers that have an internal fiber bond strength (adhesion strength) lower than the adhesion strength of the tape to the sample or test plates.

The material from which the rollers are made will affect the adhesion strength between the roller and the belt. Band selection can also affect test results. These effects can be seen as tape failures or, in some cases, higher test values ​​resulting from adhesive migration into the sample. The adhesive bond strength of the tape is critical to repeatable test results.

New batches of tape should be tested for consistent bond strength. Bond strength can be tested by performing peel tests on standard test plates or by testing a stable reference sample.
