UL 1581 VW-1 Vertical Tray Flame and Vertical Wire Flame Test

EUROLAB laboratory provides testing and compliance service within the scope of UL 1581 VW-1 standard. This standard is a small-scale test of the flammability of insulation materials.

UL 1581 VW-1 Vertical Tray Flame and Vertical Wire Flame Test

It is performed using a single sample of cable segmented in a vertical position within a three-sided metal enclosure with an underlying layer of untreated surgical cotton.

UL 1581 VW-1 was the first flame test developed to examine how flames propagate over wire and cable. Two clamps hold a single specimen vertically. The burner is mounted at a 20° angle and applied for 15 seconds, then reapplied four more times each time the wire stops burning. If the sample does not light for more than 60 seconds after either of these burning sessions, or if less than 25% of the indicator flag is lit, or if the cotton wadding is ignited during the test, the wire will pass. A "tray-rated" cable must also pass this test.
