In the event of a fire, smoke and heat exhaust ventilation systems remove smoke, creating and maintaining a smokeless layer on the floor. They also serve simultaneously to evacuate the hot gases released during the development stages of a fire. The use of such systems has become widespread to create smoke-free areas under a non-removable layer.
The values have been determined to help people evacuate from buildings and other construction works, reduce fire damage and financial loss by preventing smoke damage, improve visibility and facilitate access for firefighting, reduce roof temperatures and delay the lateral spread of fire.
To achieve these benefits, it is essential that natural smoke and heat exhaust fans (referred to as NSHEV in this standard) operate fully and reliably when desired throughout their installed life. A smoke and heat exhaust ventilation system (referred to in this standard as SHEVS) is a system of safety equipment intended to play a positive role in a fire emergency.
The NSHEV will be provided by an energy-containing opening mechanism within the NSHEV (eg gas containers, spring systems, electrical power supply) or an external energy source. For external links, the NSHEV manufacturer will specify the operating requirements for the initiating device and opening mechanism, e.g. voltage, energy.
