ISO 105-A03 Textiles, Color Fastness Tests, Part A03: Gray Scale Test to Evaluate Staining

A precise colorimetric characteristic of the balance is given as a permanent record against which newly established working standards and standards that may have changed can be compared.

Chips or swatches shall be white or neutral gray and measured with a spectrophotometer including the reflective component. Colorimetric data will be calculated using the CLE 1964 supplemental standard colorimetric system (10 observer data) for illuminant D.

Place a piece of undyed adjacent fabric (original piece) and piece that is part of a composite sample side by side in the same plane in a fastness test (sample tested). The surrounding area should be a neutral gray color between indicating the 1st grade of the gray scale and indicating the 2nd grade (this is approximately Munsell N5) to assess the color change.
