ISO 14635 specifies a test method based on an FZG2_ four square testing machine to determine the relative load carrying capacity of lubricating oils, defined by gear surface damage known as friction.
This test method can be used to evaluate such lubricant degradation under conditions of defined temperature, high shear rate, and gradually increasing load.
During testing, two gear wheels are engaged and rotated against each other under a predetermined load and speed. Gear wheels are made of hardened steel and have teeth of specific shapes and sizes. The test is carried out using a specific test oil or lubricant.
The test is performed over a period of time, typically 30 minutes, and the wear and damage to the gear wheels are evaluated using a variety of methods, including visual inspection and measurement of signs of wear.
The FZG test method is widely used in the automotive, aerospace and industrial industries to oil and lubricants under high pressure and high temperature conditions.
