The test piece is placed between a circular flat metal sensing surface and a flexible support, and the inner and outer circular lands form a seal with the test piece. Under the influence of a pressure difference, air flows through the measuring area between the measuring area and the test piece. The air flow rate is measured on a variable-area flowmeter, or the pressure difference in the measuring area is compared to the pressure difference over a known impedance. In both cases, the result is expressed as an air gap in micrometres.
Soils shall be hermetically installed and constructed in such a way that air can pass into the gap between a protection area and the measurement area and be expelled through the gap between the measuring area and the other protective area. The back of the fitting will be flat and form a floor mating surface with the flat surface of a manifold equipped with air inlet and outlet ports.
Variable area flowmeter measuring systems must have an adjustable pressure gauge fitted to the instrument to indicate the clamping pressure. Impedance measurement systems will have integrated pneumatic and electronic circuits that automatically control the clamping pressure.
