This standard specifies a method for determining the hydrolytic resistance of glass beads at 98°C. Resistivity is measured and expressed by the volume of acid required to titrate the alkali removed from the unit mass of glass, and can also be expressed in terms of sodium oxide equivalent to this volume of acid. This standard is designed for use with less resistant glass types such as soda-lime glass.

The test method is a test for glass as a material applied on glass grains. 300 g of particles with particle size between 500 µm and 2 µm allows the degree of hydrolytic attack to be measured by analysis of extraction solutions with 98nd degree water for 60 minutes at 2°C.

The test method should not be applied to glasses with an extremely low alkaline content or substantially free of alkaline species, as this method measures only alkaline release as an indicator of chemical resistance.

This fact should be noted as results may be affected if an article is not tempered to commercially acceptable quality. Such parts can break very easily if annealed too badly and extra care must be taken when handling them. No further annealing should be done prior to testing.

If multiple hammer blows are used to break the glass, the very fine particles produced may be compressed into aggregates that may or may not subsequently break apart and therefore introduce other variables to the test.
